Share Market Timing
Share Market Timing. There are two major stock market's in India- Bombay stock market (BSE) and National stock exchange (NSE). But the timing of both NSE & BSE is the same.

First of all, you would like to understand that the stock exchange in India is closed on weekends i.e. Saturday and Sunday. It's also closed on the national holidays. You'll find the list of the vacations of the stock market here.

The normal trading time for the equity stock market is between 09:15 AM to 03:30 PM, Monday to Friday.

The trading time for the commodity (MCX) market is between 10:00 AM to 11:30 PM, Monday to Friday.

The normal trading time for the Agri-people group (NCDEX) market is between 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

  • Stock Market Timings:

Trading on the equities segment takes on all days of the week aside from Saturdays and Sundays and occasions proclaimed by the trade ahead of time. The market timings of the equities segment are partitioned into three sessions. 

1) Pre-Open Session

2) Regular Trading Session
3) The Closing Session


1) Pre-Open Session

The duration of the Pre-opening session is between 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM. this is often further divided into three sub-sessions.

A)Order entry and modification open time is 09:00 hrs


B)Order entry and modification close time are 09:08 hrs


*with random closure within the last one minute. Pre-open order matching starts immediately after the close of pre-open order entry.



2) Regular Trading Session

Normal/Limited physical market open time is 09:15 hrs

Normal/Limited physical market close time is 15:30 hrs


Block Deal Session Timings:


Morning Block Deal Window: The window will work between 08:45 am to 09:00 am


Afternoon Block Deal Window: This window will work between 02:05 pm to 02:20 pm 



3) The Closing Session

The closing session is held between 15:40 hrs and 16:00 hrs

Note: Pre-opening session and therefore the Post-closing session is merely for the cash market. There are not any such sessions for the future & options.


The trade may anyway close the market on days other than the above calendar occasions or may open the market on days initially proclaimed as occasions. The exchange can also extend, advance or reduce trading hours when it deems fit and necessary. 


Overall, the share market timing in India are often briefed as:


Pre-Open Session
9:00 AM to 9:15 AM
Regular Trading Session
9:15 AM to 3:30 PM
Morning Block Deal
08:45 AM to 09:00 AM
Afternoon Block Deal
02:05 PM to 02:20 PM 
The Closing Session
3:30 PM to 3:40 PM

In addition, if you're unable to trade between these time periods, you'll place an AMO (Aftermarket order). There's no actual trading here but you'll place your buy or sell order.

Further, the Indian stock exchange also opens a special trading session during Diwali, the festival of sunshine. this is often referred to as ‘Mahurat Trading’. Its trading time is said a couple of days before Diwali.
